Dell Vostro 1550 Customer Review :

Vostro 1550 Expectations

Well, I just recently ordered a Vostro 1500 from Dell, after using a Sony Vaio and right now having a probably 7 year old Dell Dimension 1550 with 256MB Ram, 2 GHZ Pentium 4, and a 64MB GeForce4 MX 420.

For years I have run simple games like Age of Empires 2, Starcraft, and Counterstrike 1.6, which I have enjoyed and still enjoyed to this day. My most recent purchase, the laptop, will be used through the remainder of high school as a desktop replacement, where I will then be making my own machine, which will be a powerhouse, but thats not the main focus of my post.

I will still be using my Vostro(I hope, I haven't even gotten it yet *crosses fingers*) through college to bring around campus with me, but will have my desktop setup to play games and such on.

Here are my specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo 5250 1.4GHZ, 2GB, 120 GB 5200RPM and 8400M GS 128MB
15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA LCD Display

Should I expect a huge increase over what I've been using? I mainly used the computer I have now(the old dell on the top) for web surfing, music, and the games I wrote above. I've read that it will run HL2 and source games with high or Max at good framerates and I'm happy about that. I've also read that it can play most modern games with very good framerates, but on low settings, which doesn't bother me. What I'd like to do is catch up on some games I've missed over the past couple of years.

I currently have an XBOX 360 hooked up to a 50 inch HDTV, which I am enjoying very much, and is my main gaming system right now. I just bought Call of Duty 4 for it, so even if COD4 ran on this laptop, I probably wouldn't be interested in playing it.

Well, I was wondering if some of you could post some good games I've missed out on, and what kind of performance I can expect. My first purchase will probably be the orange box, because I here it will run perfect on the 8400M GS, and I also have not played the HL2 series. Well, I was wondering if some of you could post some good games I've missed out on, and what kind of performance I can expect.

Micromax A85 Superfone Review

Design
It is very admirable that a domestic smartphone from Micromax, the Micromax A85 is blessed with a large and wide TFT touch-screen display and Android operating platform. Its display measures 3.2 inches and suits its overall candy bar shape and form factor. The phone is designed is single Black color and its screen is capable of rendering s decent resolution of about 480 X 320 pixels. It runs on Android v 2.2 Froyo, has sensitive sensor controls like proximity sensor and accelerometer sensor.

Music
It has become quite common to give a stereo FM radio with RDS feature in the smartphones and Micromax A85 is no exception. It delivers a good quality music output via its multi-format music player also that supports audio formats as MP3, AAC, WAV.

Camera
Micromax A85 should be among the first domestic smartphone to have dual camera. It is quite pleasurable that it has facilitated video chats. From Android Market, Skype can be downloaded for free to carry out video calls and chats. Coming on to the cameras of this phone, it should be really appreciated that the primary camera of the phone has features as geo-tagging and digital zoom. Even the auto-focus camera is of 5 pixellete count and takes pictures at resolution of 2592 X 1944 pixels. This is located at the rear side of the phone and the pictures clicked from it can be edited by a image/video editor. It also is capable of shooting videos and those videos may be played on video player integrated in the phone. The secondary camera is of VGA type and is located at the front.

The phonebook, message inbox, music and media gallery saves the data properly.

Battery LifeTime
There is presently no information about the battery specifications of Micromax A85. However, it is vigorous Android smartphone with powerful processing unit, we expect that a complementing battery must have been given under its hood. A battery not less than 1500 mAH rating would do good and then only the kind of gaming, video recording and chatting, one wish to do would happen on this device. It should also facilitate rigorous calling.

Audio
Micromax A85 supports good audio quality and an array of polyphonic (64) and MP3 ringtones. It also supports vibration alerts and has a 3.5 mm audio jack to let users get an output on any speakers meeting this requirement.

Micromax A85 also features Google based services as Google Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Calendar and Google Talk.

Micromax A85 Superfone Cons
Strangely, Micromax phones are not so cheap or affordable. Micromax A85 is not an original product either. Though it boasts all the contemporary features, it is also important to note that it still belongs to a domestic brand. At the price at which they are offered many popular brand smartphones could be fetched too. For the brand conscious buyers, Micromax handsets may not be a choice and thus such expensive phones may not find buyers at all.

Overall
Micromax A85 is an Android based smartphone (Android v 2.2 Froyo) that has a set of impressive features that makes it an able communication, connectivity and multimedia device. It has the support of 1 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core processors and 512 MB RAM for delivering the kind of performance that it promises. The official information about its launch date, price and some of the specs is still under wraps. However, it is expected to cost somewhere around Rs. 20,000. We admire the look and design of this phone which are quite good. It boasts of high-end features as capacitive touch screen, dual cameras, vast memory support, Wi Fi, Bluetooth and GPS.

Indian manufactured tablets are real cheap and make a big deal. In competition market of tablets when Reliance tablet was launched we thought that it is the cheapest tablet available in the Indian market. Blackberry torch 9850 Review

The thin, light-weight design of this Torch, with its curvaceous lines; beautiful screen resolution; and excellent web browser make this into an excellent media-consumption device. BBM, email, and a redesigned virtual keyboard make it worthy of the name BlackBerry.

Good About Blackberry torch 9850

The Torch 9850/9860 is a beautifully sculpted device, exactingly designed to fit comfortably in the hand. The understated elegance of the phone really makes for an impressive device. The high-resolution touchscreen creates a really enjoyable media and web experience.

The Bad

This BlackBerry Smartphone isn't for everyone. Those who rely on their physical keyboards to type hundreds of words at a time will find the virtual keyboard inadequate. Some users will find the raised buttons at the bottom to be unbecoming of a BlackBerry.

Conculsion
The BlackBerry Torch 9850/9860 is a wonderful device for watching movies and exploring the world wide web. The trade-off for having a large screen and thin body is the lack of a physical keyboard. For some, this will make the device unatractive. Others, like me, will find the virtual keyboard to be quite sufficent, a comfortable compromise for a beautiful device

Nokia Lumia 800 Review

Nokia Lumia 800 Review

Love

  • Tough polycarbonate chassis
  • Free Nokia Drive sat nav
  • Camera and screen

Hate

  • Average battery life
  • Media still a pain to transfer
  • Port flaps won't last

Nokia Lumia 800: OS

Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS is fast becoming a decent competitor to the likes of Android or iOS, although it’s still a way from being their equal.

We love the easy way you can link together contacts with a swish of a finger and the simple Live Tiles to help see information in a trice, but there are still some issues: having to convert any video you want to watch is tiresome.

But many will love the simplicity of Microsoft’s OS - simply flicking the finger left and right will jump between the informative Live Tiles and the list of downloaded applications. It’s apple-esque in its speed under the finger, and something newbies will warm to instantly.

Nokia has added some of its own tricks in there too: Nokia Drive is the first free sat nav service to come bundled on any Windows Phone device, and while basic, does get you from A to B.

Nokia Music is another little gem, with dedicated radio stations offering the latest tracks packaged up in genres you’ll enjoy.
Nokia Lumia 800: Design

Using the design of the ill-fated Nokia N9, the Lumia 800 brings a curved polycarbonate chassis that’s coloured the whole way through, making it light in the hand and very hard to damage.

The curved nature of the chassis also lends a neat design aesthetic to the handset, marking it out well from the reams of sharp looking behemothic handsets on the market right now.

Nokia Lumia 800: Screen

The ClearBlack OLED screen is also top notch, with the edge to edge display beneath the curved Gorilla Glass looking the part, especially impressing when taken out into blinding daylight and you don’t have to simply guess at what you’re prodding on the screen.

It’s not as impressive when it comes to internet browsing, as despite packing in 800 x 480 pixels words still look a little rough around the edges when zoomed out.
Nokia Lumia 800: Camera

The camera is similarly cool, as while it lacks the speed of the Xperia Arc S or the iPhone 4S, the snap quality is clear and vivid while the ability to quickly post to Facebook and tag your buddies is another tech-feather in the Windows Phone 7.5 Mango cap.

Windows Phone handsets have a big advantage over most rivals with prescribed camera button, and the chrome key on the Nokia Lumia is excellent - hold it down from anywhere in the phone (even under the lock screen) and you’ll be snapping away in seconds.

It’s a simple thing, but everyone loves taking pictures, and this makes it so much easier.
Nokia Lumia 800: Verdict

Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop called this the ‘first real Windows Phone’ and based on this performance, it’s hard not to agree - if you can stand the slightly smaller screen, that is.

Battery life isn’t stellar, and while we like the contrast ratios of the ClearBlack Display, it’s not the best on the market.

However, it’s going to be more than enough for those that pick up the Lumia as their first Windows Phone, and both Nokia and Microsoft will be pretty pleased with the first fruits of their partnership.

Motorola Xoom Review

CNET Editors' Review

The good: The first tablet to combine Google's Android 3.0 software, Motorola's knack for great hardware, and Verizon's 4G network, the Xoom tablet technically offers a more powerful, more capable alternative to Apple's original iPad.
The bad: It's expensive, heftier than the iPad 2, and novice users may balk at Android 3.0's read-the-manual attitude.
The bottom line: The Xoom's spec sheet is enough to make any tablet tremble, but the price is high, the design is bulky, and Google still has some work to do before its tablet software experience is as fleshed out and intuitive as Apple's.

Motorola Xoom review by Techradar

The Motorola Xoom is the first Android 3.0 tablet to hit the market. That makes it the first Android tablet to ship with an OS that's designed especially for big screens, and that's why it's so exciting.

Every tech gadget must be judged solely on what it provides, its purpose in life, and whether it will help you accomplish tasks and enjoy your media.

With the Motorola Xoom, it's too easy to make constant iPad (and iPad 2) comparisons. Can you purchase movies as easily? Does the screen get as grimy? Does it cost more?

Read: Android 3.0 review

Yet, the Xoom is the first Android 3.0 tablet, the first really powerful tablet with a dual-core processor, and a sleek, 10.1-inch slate that is easy on the eyes.

There's no question the Xoom is a brilliant tablet, one that is incredibly flexible in terms of media you can put on the device.

With a 5-megapixel front camera and a 2-megapixel rear-facing camera, 32GB of local storage (plus a potential for more SD storage after the next software update), 1GB of RAM, 4G support once the LTE roll-out starts and after a software upgrade, and 10-hours of battery life, the Xoom has the hardware specifications to make you sit up and take notice.

Plus, the new Android 3.0 tablet interface lives and breathes in the open source world.
Frankly, the Motorola Xoom blows the Samsung Galaxy Tab out of the water, and that is saying something. We'll keep our iPad comparisons to a minimum (hey, if you wanted one of those you would have bought one by now, right?) and ratchet down our comparisons to the iPad 2 which ships in the UK on 25 March.

The Xoom is the best Android tablet around and a device that is well worth serious consideration.

You can check out our Android Tablet round-up to see how this slate measures up against three of its rivals below:

Apple iPhone 3G S Full Review

Hardware
The iPhone 3G S has many internal changes, but you really can't tell the difference at all between the 3G and 3G S by just looking at the case.

The two are so close in size that many cases for the previous model fit the new one. And the touch screen has the same size and resolution: 3.5 inches and 320 by 480 pixels (HVGA)

All the changes are internal -- Apple has bumped up the CPU speed to 600 MHz, while the iPhone 3G's was at 412 MHz. The RAM has also been doubled from 128 MB to 256 MB. Of course, the iPhone 3G S comes with 16 GB or 32 GB of storage.

The iPhone also has an improved camera, and a magnetometer is included now.

Screen
You can't look at the screen and see a difference. You can't touch the screen and feel a difference. But, there is a huge difference to this screen. It has oleophobic coating, which means there is a lot less smudging, and I mean A LOT less. It resists smudges, and if it does smudge, it pretty much cleans up with one wipe. I was always bothered by screen smudge, and to be honest I'm excited for this improvement. A great move on Apple's part.

The back of the phone still smudges the same though. If you have a white iPhone you will never know that problem, but for black iPhones, it's a completely different story.

The good: The Apple iPhone 3G offers critical new features including support for high-speed 3G networks, third-party applications, and expanded e-mail. Its call quality is improved and it continues to deliver an excellent music and video experience.

The bad: The iPhone 3G continues to lack some basic features that are available on even the simplest cell phone. Battery life was uneven, and the 3G connection tended to be shaky. Also, the e-mail syncing is not without its faults.

The bottom line: The iPhone 3G delivers on its promises by adding critical features and sharper call quality. The iTunes App Store is pretty amazing, and the 3G support is more than welcome. Critical features still are missing, and the battery depletes quickly under heavy use, but the iPhone 3G is a big improvement over the original model.

Apple iPhone 4S Review

It's been 15 months since Apple released the iPhone 4. This has left many iPhone, and would-be iPhone customers, anxious for what the company planned to bring next. As we learned recently, the iPhone 4S it is: same body, same screen, same construction, same look as the iPhone 4. To say that some people were disappointed with the 4S announcement would be an understatement.

However, to be fair, beyond the identical exterior lies the hard work that Apple put forth on the inside. An upgraded processor, an improved antenna, and an all-new camera into the iPhone 4S. The other big story, or should we say, the bigger story with the iPhone 4S is the iOS 5 software upgrade and the voice-controlled personal assistant called Siri. iOS 5 offers over 200 new features to Apple's smartphone platform, most of which are also available to current owners of previous-gen devices.

With the rapid pace at which smartphones are developing, many have called the iterative improvements with the iPhone 4S a mistake, as it seems like every other minute a new Android device is out with better, bigger, faster everything. Despite that, the iPhone 4S gently improves on the popular iPhone 4, and it betters what was already one of the best experiences available to a smartphone buyer. Documentation

The Apple iPhone 4S remains one of the most attractive smartphones to have ever been built. Apple's choice of materials and its manufacturing prowess are unmatched, and puts a group of other wanna-be competitors to shame. The iPhone 4S is physically identical to the CDMA version of the iPhone 4 and the average person won't be able to tell the difference between the two phones from the outside. I was a big fan of the iPhone 4's design when it came out, and things haven't changed enough in the market for me to think any different today.

The iPhone 4S has the same glass and metal construction as the iPhone 4. You won't find any creaks or loose parts, and the only plastic used on the phone is for the home button below the display. The phone still measures 9.3mm thick and weighs 140g. Its smaller dimensions make it feel very dense and solid in your hand. Apple's use of glass for both the front and back of the phone may be questioned by those who tend to drop their phones often, as it has a tendency to shatter, despite it being reinforced.

The smoothness of the glass gives you the feeling that you are holding a premium device when you pick it up. Apple has covered both the front and back glass panels with an oleophobic coating that resists face grease and fingerprints better than any other smartphone I have used.

The buttons along the sides of the phone for power/sleep/unlock, volume-up and volume-down, and the switch for ring/vibrate are all made of metal and are very satisfying to use. Travel and feedback is just right, and you never miss a command because the button didn't respond to your input.

If there is one complaint that can be levied against the hardware design of the iPhone 4S, is that it still features a small (by comparison) 3.5-inch display. It's still nonetheless one of the best LCD screens on the market, with its 640 x 960 pixels of resolution and near paper-like viewing angles.

The iPhone 4S' display is noticeably different than the Super AMOLED Plus screens from Samsung, as it's not nearly as saturated and punchy. However, the colors seem more accurate, and the screen is just a joy to look at. I didn't find the smaller screen size to be a hindrance in use, even though I'm used to carrying around phones with 4.3-inch or even 4.5-inch displays.

Apple expanded the storage options with the iPhone 4S, and you can now choose a 64GB model in addition to the 16GB and 32GB versions that have been available before.

It's fair to say the iPhone 4 design has stood the test of time well, and it looks just as good now as it did nearly a year and a half ago when we first gazed upon it. The same can't be said for other phones.

Processor

Let’s start with the brains behind the iPhone. The CPU has been upgraded to an A5 dual-core chip, which is said to deliver up to two times more power and up to seven times faster graphics than the iPhone 4′s single core A5 chip. I’ve been using the 4S for the past month and so far I really can’t tell THAT much of a difference in speed between it and my 4 for every day tasks. I did some side by side testing of both phones and found that booting from power off and launching all my normal apps was only about 1-2 seconds faster on the 4S. This wasn’t something I even noticed until I did the side by side comparisons. I’ve actually never had a complaint with how fast apps launch on iOS devices, so if they are now 1 second faster, it really doesn’t make me want to jump up and down with glee.

On the graphics side of things, I purchased a couple games to do some more side by sides between the 4 and 4S. I decided on Modern Combat 3 and Infinity Blade just because they are both high end games that are very rich in graphics. It’s crazy how large mobile games have become. Modern Combat 3 requires a little over 1GB and Infinity Blade takes up almost 600MBs!

Since both phones have the same resolution displays, the games look the same at first glance. But upon closer inspection, the biggest difference that I noticed were that objects on the 4S are brighter and have more reflections. Here are a couple examples.

Antenna

The iPhone 4S has a new antenna design which is supposed to improve call quality and download speeds even though the 4S isn’t a 4G phone.

“iPhone 4S is the first phone to intelligently switch between two antennas to transmit and receive, so call quality is better. It also doubles the maximum HSDPA data speeds to 14.4 Mbps.8 Which means faster connections, faster loading and reloading, and faster downloads.”

It’s nice to know that this new design has solved the whole death grip issue. But I’m not so sure it improves call quality and / or download speeds all that much - at least not for me. I’ve not had any issues with call quality on the previous iPhone once I switched from AT&T to Verizon and am not noticing any significant changes with the 4S.

The same is true for download speeds. I really haven’t noticed any significant difference on the 4S. Even when I have full bars and a 3G connection, updating the weather, reading news via the USA today app, checking for app store updates, downloading mail, etc all seem to be just as fast or slow as before. 3G speeds via Verizon have never been all that consistent for me in the first place. I can do speed tests using the free Speedtest.net app every hour and see wildly varying results each time.

Camera

Honestly, the reason why I decided to go ahead and splurge on the iPhone 4S purchase, was the upgraded camera from 5MP up to 8MP. Resolution isn’t the only upgrade though. The whole camera has been redesigned with a custom lens that has a larger f/2.4 aperture to allow for better low light photos.

Video recording has been improved from 720p up to 1080p. That’s 1280 X 720 lines of resolution vs. 1920 X 1080 progressive lines of resolution. More lines means a sharper picture. Here are some sample videos.

Battery Life

So far battery life on the iPhone 4S has been somewhat disappointing. I seem to be charging my phone more often than I did with the iPhone 4. Even after updating to iOS 5.01, which was supposed to fix battery issues, I’m not seeing much of an improvement. I’m still usually able to get through a day without charging, but my old iPhone 4 was able to last at least 2 days or longer. I am almost always close to a power source, so it’s not a big deal for me, but of course I wish it was better.
Bottom line

If you’ve read this far, you’ve probably already figured out the answer to the question in the first paragraph of this review: Am I glad that I spent way too much money for the iPhone 4S, or do I have buyer’s remorse? The answer is that I’m suffering from a moderate case of buyer’s remorse. It would have been different if I didn’t already have an iPhone 4 and/or I had been eligible for an upgrade through Verizon. But neither of these cases were true and I spent $649 on a 16GB iPhone 4S that has only a slightly better user experience than my perfectly fine iPhone 4. Oh well, that’s one of the down sides of being a gadget freak. It’s just too hard to resist the lure of a new device.

Those of you that don’t already have an iPhone 4 and are considering the 4S, go for it. It’s a great phone (and will be even better once they get the battery life issues sorted out). But if you already have the 4, my advice is to wait for the mythical iPhone 5. You’ll be glad you did. In the mean time, anyone want to buy a month old iPhone 4S that is in mint condition with no contract? Seriously…
